The BMW team used the design blueprint of their awesome 7 series saloon in the development of the brand new 6-Series Convertible. The results are quite special, as evidenced by the 50% boost in torsional rigidity.
The German manufacturers have equipped the 6-Series with rear wheel steering and flexible Dynamic Drive Control, as well as electrically adjustable damping and anti-roll bars. This means that average motorist can feel safe, even when pushing this vehicle to the max.
The BMW has extremely impressive handling capabilities, especially when accounting for it’s size and weight. Motorists have a choice between 3 different driving modes (Normal, Sport and Sport+). It is also possible to make adjustments to the reaction of the dampers, engine, steering and automatic gear box.
The German team have worked hard ensuring that the chassis is ultra stable, so that the car rides smoothly around corners. One can imagine that the guys on Top Gear would have some real fun zooming around their test track in this awe inspiring convertible.
Drivers will feel the adrenaline pumping through their veins when they put the pedal to the metal. The high performance twin-turbo V8 engine allows the car to zoom from 0-60mph in just 5 seconds and operates extremely efficiently from nearly all rev ranges.
You can barely hear the when the 6 Series is cruising. It is also worth noting that the new BMW manages an environmentally friendly 26.4mpg.
Adrian Van Hooydonk, Chief of Design for BMW, said, ‘the 6 series of course is special. It’s at the top of the line for the BMW brand. It’s a sporty vehicle and a very elegant car.
‘On the front of course the car has to both be recognisable as a BMW and it does so of course by our iconic grille and well it also has to exude this sportiness right away. You have to see that this is the new 6 series coming in your rear view mirror.
‘My favourite part of the car would have to the soft top and the fins. That looks really cool I think with the top up, which may be strange for a convertible. But in January in Detroit maybe that’s the best way.’
The BMW-6 Series is a far superior vehicle to the aged Mercedes-Benz SL. It is also way ahead of the Audi S5 when it comes to chassis firmness. Motorists who wear their hearts on their sleeves may prefer the Masariti GranCabrio. However, the Italian vehicle is very costly and doesn’t produce as much torque as the German beast.
